About

I am a final year PhD student (2009/10) working in mathematics and statistics but also supervised by a sociologist based in philosophy. My area of interest is probably most closely allied to quantitative research in medical sociology but I also have an interest in 'empirical bioethics' or, if you don't like that, social research into bioethical issues. I have a particular interest in human genetics.

My thesis revolves around informed consent for newborn bloodspot screening (the 'heel prick' that babies have) and parental experiences of this process of consent. My broad question is why do parents accept or decline this? But more specifically I am looking at the factors that affect their decision. To do this I am taking what Creswell has called 'an exploratory sequential mixed methods' approach using qualitative in-depth interviews initially. These will be followed by a questionnaire to gather quantitative data that will be analysed using structural equation modelling.

More generally my interests are in reproductive technologies, critical realism, and consent to medical technologies and how the ethical and social aspects interact.
